Marvel vs. DC: Who won in 2017?

The year is at an end and closing the curtain without discussing what made the year thick would be unforgivable. One such discourse we try to resolve on an annual basis is the Marvel-DC contention; who had the best movie? It was a busy year for both franchises, Marvel gave us four brilliant, witty, absorbing installments, while DC in all its glory brought two of their best movies since inception, pun intended. The US-Russia rivalry has nothing on the antagonism fans of these cinematic universes have conjured.

We would rate these movies in reverse order.

6. Spider-Man: Homecoming

Director: Jon Watts

In a bid to re-re-invent the Spiderman series, Marvel ventured into making this forcibly funny, appalling mass of sub-par superhero action. Credit should be given to Tom Holland, brilliant cheeky actor, but the scripting and directing here ruined whatever fine acting was on display.

Critic Score: 4/10

Budget: $175 million

Box Office: $880 million

 

5. Logan

Director: James Mangold

Logan is gone. This was his farewell movie, it was simple, organic, yet very intriguing. A lot more would have been done with the Wolverine’s swansong but James Mangold and his crew kept it safe, blood-letting and repetitive.

Critic Score: 6/10

Budget: $97 million

Box Office: $616 million

 

4. Wonder Woman

Director: Patty Jenkins

It’s so hard to fault this flick, only because it is devoid of any kind of cinematic risk. The origin story was told and the god of war cameoed and that seemed to be all Jenkins could afford on her first of many DC debuts. So, good movie, not excellent, good.

Critic Score: 7/10

Budget: $149- $290 million

Box Office: $821 million

 

3. Thor Ragnarok

Director: Taika Waititi

The budding bromance between Thor and The Hulk/Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), their epic fight scenes and Hulk’s maniacal delivery, all but made this movie a great Marvel registration. Taika Waititi owned this movie, pundits are already seeking that Marvel keeps him on as the Norse mythological tale continues

Critic Score: 7.5/10

Budget: $200 million

Box Office: $833 million

 

2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Director: James Gunn

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a fine continuation to the story of these five unlikely heroes, it’s an action-packed movie that actually tells a story, a story that introduces a few characters that would soon prove significant in the Marvel cinematic universe. Director, James Gunn seems to be on the edge in this one as you can actually sense how much he is trying to please his very “critical” audience and keep up with the standard of the near-perfect first part.

Critic Score: 8/10

Budget: $200 million

Box Office: $863 million

 

1. Justice League

Director: Zack Snyder, Chris Terrio and Joss Whedon

This is basically the best two hours DC has ever created. It had humour, content, valour and vitality in all the right amounts. It makes our Marvel-DC movie of the year for this reason. Zack Snyder’s gloomy contrast and pale plots didn’t prevail here, thanks to the brilliance of Avengers’ director, Joss Whedon. Great, Great movie

Box Office: $745.6 million
